Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch erdbēre, erdbēsie, from Old Dutch *erthberi, from Proto-West Germanic *erþubaʀi, from Proto-Germanic *erþōbazją (literally “earth-berry”). The latter part of the compound was replaced in modern Dutch with bei, from Middle Dutch baye, from Old French baie, from Latin bacca. Cognate with West Frisian ierdbei, German Erdbeere, Danish jordbær.
