[edit]Borrowed from Arabic السُكَّر (as-sukkar),[1][2] from Persian شکر (šakar), from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭪𐭥 (škʿ /šakar/), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śárkarā, “ground or candied sugar”), originally "grit, gravel", from Proto-Indo-European *ḱorkeh₂ (“gravel, boulder”).
