From a Cariban term meaning “breast, udder” (perhaps by way of Arawakan-Taíno), ultimately from Proto-Cariban *manatɨ. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “why would a word for breast come to mean manatee?”)
