Etymology

[edit]

From Portuguese mouro (Moor). Compare Spanish moro.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈmɔ.ɾu/, /ˈmɔ.ɾɔ/

Noun

[edit]

môro

  1. Marathi (person from Maharashtra)
    môro-chuta Sikh
  2. a Muslim
    Synonym: ach'á
  3. (by extension) any non-Christian Indian (person from India)
puliça-môroIndian soldier formerly recruited from Goa, Damao and Diu to serve in Macao's police force
    carí di móroIndian curry

Usage notes

[edit]
  • môro-chut, rather than a formation from môro, may instead be borrowed from Cantonese 摩囉差摩啰差 (mo1 lo1 caa1) or at least influenced by it. Otherwise, the etymology of chut is unclear.
  • In sense 2, probably not derogatory, where ach'á may be. In addition, most likely describes all Muslims, not specifically South Asian ones (although in the context of Macau, extremely few Muslims hail from elsewhere).
