Template:ko-tone

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Relying on Module:ko-tone. Currently works only with S. Gyeongsang/Busan dialect, and with nouns or noun-like forms. Due to issues in the (self-admittedly shoddy) code design, the module currently does not work correctly with nouns that have multiple instances of the same Hangul block. Hopefully this will be fixed in time.

The Busan dialect has two tonemes, H(igh) and L(ow), resulting in four distinct tones: H, L, HL/F(alling), and LH/R(ising). The following tone patterns exist for nouns and are accounted for by the model as terms in {{ko-tone|}}:

  • For one-syllable forms:
    • H: Usually H but becomes L before a multisyllabic suffix that begins with a consonant
    • H_H_reg: Always H and makes the subsequent syllable H as well
    • H_H_irreg: Always H and makes the subsequent syllable H as well, except before the locative suffix (-e), which stays as L
    • F: Always F
    • L_reg: Always L
  • For two-syllable nouns forms:
    • HH: Always HH
    • HL: Always HL
    • LH_reg: Usually LH, but becomes LL before a multisyllabic suffix that begins with a consonant
    • LH_H: Always LH and makes the subsequent syllable H as well
    • LF: Always LF
  • For three-syllable nouns and verb/adjective stems:
    • HHL
    • HLL
    • LHH
    • LHL
    • LLH: Becomes LLL before a multisyllabic suffix that begins with a consonant
    • LLF
  • For four-syllable nouns:
    • LLHL

Unfortunately, the standard dictionaries of Gyeongsang dialects only mark pitch accent in isolation, so that distinguishing e.g. LH_reg and LH_H is not possible without reference to an actual speaker or to a specialized source focusing specifically on accentual pattern.
