Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from French tasse, from Arabic طَاس (ṭās) (a shortening of طَسْت (ṭast)), from Middle Persian tšt' (tašt), ultimately from the past participle of the Proto-Iranian verb *taš- (to make, construct; to cut). Cognate with dialectal English tass (cup), Dutch tas (cup), Hunsrik Tass; more distantly, doublet of Text and Technologie.
