Irish philosopher George Berkeley claimed in his book "Siris" (1744) that siris meant "chain" in Ancient Greek, but was also used as a name for the river Nile. I haven't been able confirm or disprove that claim yet, and in Greek letters it would be a different word for Wiktionary, of course, but as it has by now a long history in English language, too, that claim might be worthy of a small note somewhere in the article - especially in the case should it be found true. --Oop (talk) 22:52, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

It's evidently a branch of the Nile, not the full river; the Greek is Σίρις (Síris) and the Latin thence is Siris. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:19, 17 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
