[edit]New Latin, Latinized from Old Norse rosmhvalr (“walrus”), from rosm (“red, red-brown”) + hvalr (“whale”). For the first element see Proto-Germanic *rustaz, though likely influenced by hross (“horse”); alternatively, from Finnish mursu.
