[edit]Causative-iterative of *činǫti (“to probe, to gauge”) + *-iti (cognate with Ancient Greek τῐ́νω (tínō, “to pay honor”)) and/or related noun *činъ (“rank, status”) + *-iti, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kʷey- (“to enquire, to evaluate”) < *kʷ- (interrogative particle).
