New Latin, from Ancient Greek πᾰρᾰ- (para-, “beside”) +‎ γόνῐμος (gónimos, “productive, fertile”), from γόνος (gónos, “seed, genitals”) +‎ -ῐμος (-imos, “-able”), for its ovaries and testes are next to each other.
