From Middle Low German Grö̂nlant, a calque of Old Norse Grǿnland (Greenland), from grǿnn (green) +‎ land (land). The High-Germanized form Grünland did not establish itself; that with -ö- was reinforced by Danish Grønland. Compare the same in Island.
