First attested as berendrech in 1265. From Middle Dutch Berendrecht, Barendrecht. The first element may be Middle Dutch bere (mud), beer (boar, male pig), or Old Dutch Bero (a personal name); the second is -drecht. Compare Duivendrecht, Ossendrecht, Papendrecht, Woensdrecht and Zwijndrecht.
