Maltese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Arabic ر ء ي (r-ʔ-y).
This highly weak root was extended in Maltese with an initial w-, which probably stems from the -u- in the verb form juri, from Arabic يُرِي (yurī). The past tense (originally *era) was extended to wera and this semivowel was then used in other derivatives like wirja. Words directly inherited from Arabic lack the w-, but since the same occurs with original w- (cf. ġieħ from w-ġ-ħ), it is nevertheless appropriate to construe the Maltese root as w-r-j.
