[edit]From Hebrew אָבִיב (avív, literally “ears of barley”), hence “the season of beginning barley-crop”, because the grains start ripening at that time of year. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

- The first month of the Jewish ecclesiastical year, corresponding nearly to the Gregorian April. After the Babylonish captivity this month was called Nisan. [Mid 6th century.][1]
