[edit]From Middle High German *mūltier, from Old High German *mūltior, from Proto-West Germanic *mūladeuʀ, from *mūl + *deuʀ. Equivalent to obsolete Maul (“mule”) + Tier (“animal”). Cognate with Dutch muildier.
