From Middle High German *mūltier, from Old High German *mūltior, from Proto-West Germanic *mūladeuʀ, from *mūl +‎ *deuʀ. Equivalent to obsolete Maul (mule) +‎ Tier (animal). Cognate with Dutch muildier.
