From Middle French riper, ripper, from Old French riper, of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 494: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "gem" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. origin, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *wrībaną (to rub). Compare Dutch wrijven, German reiben.
