From Old Galician-Portuguese mergullar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *merguliāre, from Latin mergulus, diminutive of mergus (diver; loon), from mergō (I dive, I plunge). Cognate with Portuguese mergulhar; compare also Spanish somorgujar.
