From Proto-Germanic *fehtaną. Cognate with Old Frisian fiuhta, Old Saxon fehtan, Dutch vechten, Old High German fehtan (German fechten). Ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *peḱ-. Related to Old English gefeoht
