Etymology

Borrowed from the Middle Low German compound dumdrīste, in which dum (dumm) did not mean "stupid" but rather "reckless". Later interpreted more literally as dumm +‎ dreist, literally dumb-brash.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdʊmˌdʁaɪ̯st/
  • Audio:(file)

Adjective

dummdreist (strong nominative masculine singular dummdreister, comparative dummdreister, superlative am dummdreistesten)

  1. audacious, reckless (impudent, stupid, inappropriate through lacking consideration); generally of speech or social behaviour, not dangerous acts
Es war schon dummdreist, den Richter in der Pause zu fragen, was ein Freispruch kosten würde.
