From Proto-Vietic *buːʔ ~ *puːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔbuuʔ (“to suck at the breast”). Cognate with Khmer បៅ (baw), Pnar bu, Khmu [Cuang] buʔ, Shwe Palaung ဘူ, Gata' buˀ. Related to vú (“breast”), which derived from a prefixed form.
