First attested as eleuelden in 1427. Compound of an unclear first element and veld (“field”). The first element has been variously interpreted as Old Saxon *elo (“yellow”) (as a reference to plants growing near the hamlet), Old Saxon Elo (a personal name) and Old Dutch elo (“moose”).
