From Ottoman Turkish یوتمق (yutmak, to swallow), from Proto-Turkic *yubut- (to swallow). Cognate with Azerbaijani udmaq (to swallow), Kazakh жұту (jūtu), Turkmen ýuvutmak (to swallow), Uzbek yutmoq (to swallow), etc.
