Return and Volatility Spillover between Stock Prices and Exchange Rates in Croatia: A Spillover Methodology Approach, Tihana Škrinjarić, Lidija Dedi and Boško Šego,
in Journal for Economic Forecasting
(2021)
Keywords: The relationship between stock prices, returns and exchange rates is important for policymakers for tailoring macroeconomic policies that will promote economic growth. It is also important for potential investors who consider real investment projects and forecast asset returns and risks. This research focuses on the stock return and exchange rates co-movements in Croatia, by utilizing a VAR model and spillover index of Diebold and Yilmaz (2009). Empirical research is provided for the Croatian market, which has yet not been implemented in such a manner. Based on the results from the analysis, it can be concluded from a portfolio standpoint that return spillovers from exchange rates to stock returns were greater than volatility spillovers. This could have potential in hedging portfolio strategies. The same is true for the direction from stock to exchange rates returns and volatility.
Uganda: A review of the World Bank Jobs Portfolio, Vismay Parikh and Timothy Clay,
from The World Bank
(2019)
Keywords: The FY11-15 country assistance strategy (CAS), which was designed jointly by the Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), selectively assisted the government in implementing its national development plan by focusing on four strategic objectives: first, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth; second, enhancing public infrastructure; third, strengthening human capital; and fourth, improving good governance and value for money. The objectives of the CAS, which was selectively aligned with Uganda’s development strategy, were relevant for a country with poor infrastructure, weak public service delivery, low levels of human capital, and underdeveloped institutions. The Bank played a central role in development partner coordination and harmonization, both as former co-chair of the joint budget support framework and as chair of the local development partners’ group. Independent evaluation group (IEG) finds that the results framework was not invariably helpful in tracking progress towards CAS objectives.

The Influence of Institutional Quality and Financial Risk on Stock Market Index: An Empirical Study for TurkeyAbstract: This paper aims to analyze the -possible- effects of institutional quality and (financial) risk level on BIST 100, BIST Industrial and BIST Financial Indexes via Carrioni-Silvestre (2009) multiple structural breaks unit root test, Maki (2012) multiple structural breaks co-integration test and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) methodology. In the research model of the study, institutional structure is proxied by an institutional quality index derived from data related to bureaucratic quality, corruption, democratic accountability, ethnic tension, external conflict, government stability, internal conflict, political risk, law and order, and investment profile obtained from International County Risk Guide (ICRG). High values in institutional quality index represent weak institutional structure while low values represent high institutional structure. The high financial risk ratio represents a strong financial structure. The empirical findings of Maki (2012) test indicate that all indexes except BIST Financial Index and explanatory variables show co-integration relationship in the long term. Long run parameters estimated by DOLS methodology indicate that there exists a long-term negative relationship between institutional quality index and BIST 100 and BIST Industrial Indexes, while a positive relationship between financial risk level and BIST 100 and BIST Industrial Indexes, Yüksel İltaş and Gülbahar Üçler,

SHADOW ECONOMY AND FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS FOR THE CASE OF ROMANIA Abstract: Shadow economy (SE) represents a controversial phenomenon, present more or less in all economies, whose empirical estimates should be regarded with due reserve. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the nature of the relationship between Romanian shadow economy, expressed as % of the official GDP and the foreign direct investments (FDI) using two causality analysis methods, namely the Granger causality analysis method and the Toda-Yamamoto procedure, based on quarterly data, over the period 2000-2010. The paper will also try to particularize the implications of this relationship on the sustainable development of the Romanian economy. For that purpose we will use the shadow economy series estimated in a previous article using one of the monetary approaches, the currency demand approach, based on econometrical methodology of error correction models and co-integration. The quantitative demarche of shadow economy estimation is detailed in author (2013). The empirical results highlight a unidirectional short-run causality that runs only from foreign direct investments to the shadow economy. The impulse responses function indicates a short-run negative relationship between FDI and SE, Adriana AnaMaria Davidescu(alexandru) and Vasile Alecsandru Strat,

The initial public health response to the breakout of COVID-19 required fundamental changes in individual behavior, such as isolation at home or wearing masks. The effectiveness of these policies hinges on generalized public obedience. Yet, people’s level of compliance may depend on their beliefs regarding the pandemic. We use original data from two waves of a survey conducted in March and April 2020 in eight Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries ( n = 21,649) to study gender differences in COVID-19−related beliefs and behaviors. We show that women are more likely to perceive COVID-19 as a very serious health problem, to agree with restraining public policy measures, and to comply with them. Gender differences in attitudes and behavior are sizable in all countries. They are accounted for neither by sociodemographic and employment characteristics nor by psychological and behavioral factors. They are only partially mitigated for individuals who cohabit or have direct exposure to the virus. We show that our results are not due to differential social desirability bias. This evidence has important implications for public health policies and communication on COVID-19, which may need to be gender based, and it unveils a domain of gender differences: behavioral changes in response to a new risk, Vincenzo Galasso, Vincent Pons, Paola Profeta, Michael Becher, Sylvain Brouard and Martial Foucault,
