Abstract:
This article deals with institutional trends in the area of career guidance in France since the beginning of the 1960s. Looking at the development of guidance services from a historical perspective reveals the extent to which they have been consistent with education policy and developments in the labour market. This retrospective study describes four stages related to different concepts of the role of guidance services. It also re-examines recent trends in France in light of European Union and OECD (Organisation for economic Co-operation and Development) strategies regarding the deployment of lifelong guidance calling for coordinated and quality implementation. This article refers to the regional initiatives along these lines and explains some of the obstacles to widespread implementation of the approaches experimented with in France. Lastly, it describes the various public action options implemented abroad to reform guidance services.
