Abstract: Stemming from a long tradition of mutual aid and social solidarity, social finance in Bulgaria arose from particular political and economic conditions. Cooperative banking played a pivotal role in the establishment of Bulgaria's financial and economic system between the two world wars (1919-1938). This article examines the rapid growth of cooperative banks and their impact on the economy in the inter-war period. In the early 1930s, cooperative banks became the most developed form of cooperatives in Bulgaria, particularly in towns.
