Discussion: Do you have a mentor?

I've been thinking a lot about how mentor/mentee relationships develop, and I have some general questions I'd like to ask the community.

For those of you who have a mentor:

  1. How did you find this person?
  2. How did you build this relationship to where they became your mentor?
  3. Is this someone you work with?

For those of you who do not have a mentor:

  1. Have you had one in the past?
  2. Do you wish you had one?

General questions

  1. What do you look for in a mentor?

Have you had one in the past?

Yes, when I started the CC course I did an internship where I met an experienced programmer, he helped me get started and gave me tips on algorithms.

Do you wish you had one?

Yes I do

What do you look for in a mentor?

Someone to advise me on the trail to becoming a developer, someone to criticize my codes or something like that...

My first job as a junior sysadmin I had a senior take me under his wing and he often took great joy in breaking systems in interesting ways, only to pass them back to me to fix. Was one of the best jobs I had as I continuously learnt so much. I've now worked my way up to head of my own department but I often look back and wish I still had a similar environment where it was so easy to grow.

I'm hoping to build a similar ethos in my own department as soon as it's mature enough.

That's awesome! I love when we find mentors that make us want to take others under our wings 😊
