Really nice photographs of the Japanese Navy !
I have created Category "Japanese Imperial Navy" to deal with them; perhaps now it will be easier for you just to add the tag to the description of your images (that'll make them go straight into the Category:Japanese Imperial Navy page). I have already tagged the images you had put on Ship. Cheers ! Rama 11:26, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Redundancy
[edit]Hi, an image you uploaded, Image:Ovation of the Reichstag after announcing the 'peaceful' acquisition of Austria.jpg has been listed as redundant since it is identical with another image. Regards, Thuresson 06:11, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Iwo Jima
[edit]The image you uploaded was shot by Joe Rosenthal of Associated Press, and Associated Press owns the copyright to it. It is not in the public domain (there seems to be a miscataloguing in the US archive site). We already got calls from Associated Press about it; they gave us a non-free license for use on WP. So this image should not be on commons. David.Monniaux 18:49, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Copyright
[edit]Image:Mass_of_men,_horses_and_equipment.jpg is Crown Copyright. I am not sure exactly what this means for Commons LoopZilla 11:26, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Hi LoopZilla. The crown copyright of this picture has expired since there are 50 years gone by when it was shot. The Imperial War Museeum has given the access-right: unristricted to it (see link), so we can use it. A few days before i talked about that problem with someone else on the german wikipedia and he agreed with me in this case. --W.wolny 15:15, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Are you sure we may use them? I'm refering here to Image:Short Stirling with a Horsa glider.jpg. In terms http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/terms.asp they wrote, that the Crown Copyright protected material may be reproduced free of charge in any format or medium for research, private study or for internal circulation within an educational organisation... Where Crown Copyright does not exist, this will always be stated....Commercial users identifying any photograph that they wish to reproduce on a commercial basis, regardless of copyright status, should always contact the Photograph Archive. To me it seems an unfree licence... Pibwl 22:15, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, sorry but I can't speak German. This is about your Alamein.png map, I noticed an error. The corps at the southern end of the British position should be XIII Corps, not XXX Corps, which was situated to the north. Leithp 20:32, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Two of the images you uploaded (btw, thanks for lots of useful photos) look like lower quality versions of images already existing here: Image:US tanks pass through Coutances.jpg looks like a bigger resolution, lower quality version of Image:Coutances.jpg and Image:Field piece in the Periers sector.jpg like a darker version of Image:155mm-howitzer-france.gif.

Sure! You can count on me. I'm going now to verify the license of the images uploaded by the user you've mentioned. I will maintain you informed. --Joanot Martorell ✉ 20:21, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- I've seen the source where Aristides have got the images. In the page from URL http://centroeu.com/uboote/fotos.html there claims the following:
- Colección S. Mata. Parte I: 143 fotos propiedad de los comandantes Karl Daublebsky von Eichhain y Carl-Gabriel von Gudenus.
- Translation: S. Mata's Colection. 1st Part: 143 pictures on property of Commandants Karl Daublebsky von Eicchain and Carl-Gabriel von Gudenus.
- So, I realize that the permission of use of those images must be given from the person who have the property of these pictures. It seems to be a colection of "copied" photos from pictures owned by those two Commandants, so if Aristides wanted to upload them he should to ask permission to this both commandants not to S. Mata. Am I being wrong?. But there is also another problem... in this page it also claim to be "original" ("333 fotos originales de U-Boote"), but... it's clear that a "scanned" pic from old photos can't be "original". But perhaps it also would mean that S. Mata have the original photos. --Joanot Martorell ✉ 20:46, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
I'm curious, what "post work" did you do on this image? It looks like it's been run through a sharpness filter, and I'm not sure if that's helped the quality any. Do you have the original? Night Gyr 11:49, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- The source offers a new bigger version, so I've uploadet this one. The only post works are circumsizing and manually clearing from faults. No sharpening was done on the new one. Greetings from --W.wolny 12:23, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
Hi W.wolny, I noticed you tagged this PD-because. But it's not PD because the IMF says "Access: Unrestricted" (what does access mean, anyway?). It's PD because it falls under British Crown copyright which has expired. So you should use PD-BritishGov. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:16, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Imperial war museum- PD tags updated
[edit]I place this note here not for W.wolny's benefit but for anyone who may have some trouble on verifying PD status with the links that he left for IWM images. The way the IWM search engine now functions, these links no longer work. However, all his images may be quickly verified by going to the photo search page at Imperial War Museum and enter the Photograph number that W.wolny very thoughfully listed.
None of them should be deleted. The correct tag is PD-BritishGov
Thanks. -Mak 02:40, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Fake?
MfG, --NEUROtiker 21:50, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi NEUROtiker. Gruß von --W.wolny 04:52, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
MfG, --NEUROtiker 19:17, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Servus,
Gruß, --Wiggum 20:19, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Gruß von --W.wolny 13:03, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Schönen Feiertag noch, --Wiggum 14:24, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I am sorry, but "libre de droits" does not mean "public domain". It means royalty free. Have a look at Que veut dire "libre de droits". The French for "public domain" is "domaine publique". Teofilo 21:46, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Teofilo, thx for your advice. All pics that are labled "libre de droits" are in the public domain, because they are from the National Archives USA or the National Archives Canada. I didn't say, that the frase "libre de droits" means "Public Domain". --W.wolny 08:40, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
- Are you sure ? It could mean as well that the National Archives of Canada and USA are the licensees of a royalty free license. In such a case the question whether the licensor allows other users than the National Archives to use the pictures remains open. While the question on who is the licensor and who is the licensee remains obscure, the "royalty free" mention suggests that there is a license, and a license means that there is a copyright owner. The fact that the website requests that their name and that of the USA/Canada Archives should be quoted may mean that they hold a copyright on the images. It seems problematic to claim that any picture is in the Public Domain, when you don't know the name of the photographer in the first place. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/notices/016-200-e.html#e says : Some of the material you will find on the Library and Archives Canada website is protected by copyright owned by Library and Archives Canada. In such cases, users must obtain written permission from Library and Archives Canada prior to reproducing the material. To obtain permission, please contact the Copyright Bureau at copyright/droit_d'auteur@lac-bac.gc.ca. http://www.archivesnormandie39-45.org is a French website. Maybe they have not grasped everything of USA or Canadian copyright laws, not to speak about the French copyright law which stresses moral rights of authors and requires quoting their names. Commons-l subscription
[edit]Hello W.wolny,
as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.
If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. [edit]Please go through the images you uploaded - there seem to be a lot of copyright issues among them. Hi. I had some trouble with the PD tag you had put on the image. I was uncertain whether the image itself was PD and if the webmaster of would agree.
So I contacted him by mail and he confirmed that the maps had been scanned by him from the US Marine Corps monograph "Bougainville and the Northern Solomons" by Major John M. Rentz, USMCR; published by the Historical Branch, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps in 1946, thus public domain.
I updated the tag of that image. I know there are others that come from that website, but if I do not find them all, you know what to do next time you find one. Bradipus 16:27, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ouch! I am afraid you may meet trouble with that tag. Look at Commons:Deletion requests/Template:PD-PCL for instance. They appear to be deleting non standard tags. In the case of Hyperwar and other ibiblio projects, I do not know if you will find a general agreement on the PD classification based on "The content of this web site is made up, primarily, of "public domain" (non-copyright) materials in English". I mean, I understand ibiblio is just hosting stuff, and it is up to the guy who uploads something to make sure it is PD or GFDL or wathever other licence compatible with the project. I suspect they do not check that the material is indeed PD, and that they would just delete the content should somebody come up with a complaint. In other words, we have no firm proof that the PD policy of ibiblio means that all material on ibiblio is indeed PD. That is why I specifically asked to the Hyperwar guy what the basis was for him putting the stuff in the PD.
- So I would suggest that the appropriate way to tag these images is by using PD-because, with the kind of explanation I put in Image:Naval Operations off Bougainville - 1943.jpg. But I am no specialist here, just giving my advice, maybe you should post something on the Village pump. Bradipus 11:41, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Administrative notice
[edit]Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.
If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.
This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.
Thanks for uploading Image:Mussolini in conversation with Field Marshal Rommel.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Operation market Garden 2 para orbats
[edit]Hello Mr Wolny,
I request your expertise on OPERATION MARKET GARDEN, specifically Order of battle integrated with map plus any insight you may feel is useful.
I'm a history student conducting a project on 2nd Para in OP MARKET GARDEN. Without doubt some of your maps have been the best I've seen on the internet. And I was wondering if you could upload or send me some more.
My lecturer and project colleagues were really impressed with the ones that gave an overview of the operation. My lecturer also asks if he could use your maps on wiki as teaching material
I would really appreciate your assistance for detailed orbats of 2 para during OPERATION MARKET GARDEN, and keep up yor good work!
Cheers
David O
- Hello David,
- thanks for your commendation about my work on "Market Garden".
- I'm sorry that I must say that these maps I elaborated for the article are the only ones I ever made. They are based on inquest in various museums in Arnhem and the surrounding area - especially the de:Airborne Museum Hartenstein (german wiki-article).
- If you wanna use them feel free to download them from commons. The maps are licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License and may be used even for education purposes.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:32, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

Photo of HMS Exeter being bombed in Java Sea
[edit]Dear Sir,
You have this photo incorrectly labelled / captioned on page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Exeter_%2868%29
The photo is not taken during the Battle of the Java Sea (27th Feb 1942), but on the 15th Feb 1942 during the so-called Gasper Strait sortie (and was taken from HMAS Hobart, as quoted by reliable sources, which was not present during the Battle of the Java Sea either).
The date photo taken has always been listed with the image on the Australian War Memorial Exeter page ( http://www.awm.gov.au/search/collections/?q=Exeter&conflict=all&submit=Search ) and the Imperial War Museum have altered the details regarding the image on their Exeter page ( http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205086915 ) since the pic was posted there.
Besides, the splashes seen are from bombs, not shells, and there were no bombs dropped on the fleet on 27th.
Also for the same photo on the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Java_Sea you have the date in caption correct, but it is HMAS Hobart who was accompanying Exeter, not HMAS Perth, as Perth was not there on 15th.
A correction to the description on the (various) Wiki pages is in order then.
PS. The message above re Iron Bottom Sound is also correct. That is, wreck map is inaccuarte.

File:British prisoners at Dunkerque, France.jpg
[edit]Hallo Wolfgang. Jemand hat schon lange her die folgenden Wörter in der Diskussionseite geschrieben : Hi, this picture was taken in Veules-les-Roses near St-Valéry-en-Caux which is quite far SW from Dunkerque. Not all British soldiers were evacuated here; actually they were Scots from the British 51st (Highland) Infantry Division (World War II). Low in the following page [3] there is a pic (unfortunately very small) taken at the same place, with a wider view of the surrounding area. That small pic also shows a German guard. Compare with both older and modern pics here: [4]. PpPachy (talk) 01:47, 9 February 2008 (UTC). Nortmannus (talk) 09:43, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Rabaul - map 02.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Rabaul - map 02.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hello, Wolfgang. I deleted my message from last Saturday, since my neighbor who served as a U.S. anti-aircraft gunner in the Bougainville campaign told me just now you are correct, that the gun pictured was used as an anti-aircraft gun. He said they were set up in groups of 4 to fire volleys. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dperkins16 (talk • contribs) 21:53, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

File tagging File:Milne bay 1942.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Milne bay 1942.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Uncategorized images include:

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
