Object history
Deutsch: Der Stadt Nieheim ist mit Urkunde des Regierungspräsidenten Detmold vom 8. Februar 1974 das Recht zur Führung eines Wappens und einer Flagge verliehen worden.

Das Kreuz und die Farben Rot und Gold entstammen dem Wappen des Hochstifts Paderborn, dessen Gebiet die Stadt über Jahrhunderte zugehörte. Die Kugeln symbolisieren den heiligen Nikolaus, den Schutzheiligen der Stadt und ihrer Pfarrkirche.

Das erste bekannte Stadtwappen stammt aus dem Jahre 1591. Es hat eine leicht andere Form mit einem durchgehenden statt freischwebenden Kreuz. In dieser Form wird es am 18. Juli 1908 vom preußischen König bestätigt.[1]
