Commons:Deletion requests File:Gil Hillin Beverly Hills Cop (1984).webp

Commons:Deletion requests File:Gil Hillin Beverly Hills Cop (1984).webp seems related to COM:HD#How to change the name of a portrait which most likely is about en:File:Gil Hillin Beverly Hills Cop (1984).webp. @Jmabel: Since you're an admin on Commons and Wikipedia, perhaps you can help this person out? The file probably is OK as non-free content, unless en:WP:FREER is an issue or it's a Getty image, but it needs a non-free use rationale and needs to be added to an article to avoid speedy deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:10, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. The file in question is now deleted. The DR – it depends, but currently it was convenient to delete the DR as well, because it was not properly filed. Taivo (talk) 13:38, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring

See File:European Russia location map (2014–2022, Crimea disputed).svg. User:Ecrusized is edit warring against multiple editors despite the file name stating that this includes Crimea marked as disputed (this is also derived from the image without Crimea). Also edit warring on other files. Mellk (talk) 04:17, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not edit warring with anyone, except you, who is restoring Crimea (internationally recognized Ukrainian territory) on Russian maps. You also do not appear to be providing an edit summary for your reverts. Ecrusized (talk) 10:09, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You were reverted by NordNordWest, then proceeded to revert two more times despite being told that your reverts were problematic. There is no rule that all maps cannot include disputed territories. Even if there was such a rule, the better approach would be to request deletion, not mass reverting. I will also note that you restored an old version with outdated boundaries (e.g. Moscow). Mellk (talk) 10:20, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. I kept the file speedily, because it is widely used. Taivo (talk) 13:34, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Science Photo Competition 2024 in Ukraine: Request for MassMessage

Hi! I have a quick request from organizers of the Ukrainian edition of Science Photo Competition 2024 – we'd like to invite people who participated in this context in the past to join this year's edition

  • Text of the message (first line is the subject, everything else is the body of the message; I've already accounted for having a correct signature & timestamp)

Issue on Commons talk:Abuse filter?

Hi, I think we have an issue here. Please check edits by Special:Contributions/2003:ED:0:0:0:0:0:0/32. Could a German speaking admin look into it, please?

This is a long running very complicated case. As I see nothing that requires an intervention at this point I would just ignore it. GPSLeo (talk) 19:32, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I don't know there could be a third alternative between dead or alive. It should be a new version of the Schrödinger's cat. Yann (talk) 20:10, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With complicated case I meant the dispute between the IP which is probably the blocked User:Gordito1869 and the dead user. I think we can trust User:Oursana. GPSLeo (talk) 20:28, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that the IP is Gordito1869, so it should be blocked as well. Yann (talk) 20:49, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not expect that they continue but they did so I blocked them now. GPSLeo (talk) 07:34, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I reblocked a larger range for 2 weeks. That's the time during which there have been disruption from Special:Contributions/2003:ED:0:0:0:0:0:0/32, and no other edit. Yann (talk) 10:02, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please, rev del these files.

Saad Ali Khan Pakistan

Saad Ali Khan Pakistan (talk · contribs) has today been blocked on en.wiki after they were identified as being a sockpuppet. Their reaction has been to nominate for deletion dozens of maps they uploaded to commons (many of which are in use on English and Urdu wikis) with the rationale "I am the owner and copyright holder of this map and I want it to be deleted because I will use this on my own website". This appears disruptive – should the deletion requests be closed down? The responses to this one suggest their rationale is not a valid one. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 22:25, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

These could all be speedy-kept. You can't revoke an irrevocable license. Nothing of it being licenced prevents him using it also on his own site. - Jmabel ! talk 22:49, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. France had changed its flag since 2020. However, the names of the files are incorrect, making the flag cannot be updated in all wiki pages. I suggest moving File:Flag of France.svg to File:Flag of France (1976-2020).svg while moving File:Flag of France (1794–1815, 1830–1974, 2020–present).svg to File:Flag of France.svg. These should be moved at same time to prevent the change by the bot. Пусть от победык победе ведёт! 10:26, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Matrix: have you checked this RfC? M.Bitton (talk) 11:41, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Bitton: There's precedent to move files to new names when the flag is updated, e.g. File:Flag of Kyrgyzstan.svg, File:Flag of Mauritania.svg, File:Flag of Malawi.svg, File:Air Force Ensign of India.svg etc. The discussion (not RfC) you linked also has 5 1/2 agree votes vs 3 oppose votes, and 5.5 > 3 so seems like a rough consensus to me. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 19:57, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix: my bad for linking to the discussion when I actually meant the RfC that the discussion was based on. I didn't know that there was such a rule as "precedent" on Commons, but since there is one, we might as well make full use of it and change the colours of the flag according to this official source (which would make it closer to the one that was replaced). Please let me know what you think. M.Bitton (talk) 02:31, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Bitton: You seem to have misunderstood the source you linked. It looks to be defining a colour palette for French government websites rather than talking about the flag. Indeed there is no mention of a flag on the page. Pinging @Jean-Frédéric and Christian Ferrer: who can verify this as French speakers. A good source that agrees the current version is the official Ggvernment flag is Britannica.
Also, about your point "I didn't know that there was such a rule as "precedent" on Commons", what I mean is that usually flags are moved to new names when updated, so it wouldn't make sense to not do it in this scenario. RfCs at enwiki don't really affect Commons, also noting that enwiki decided to upload their own locally hosted file for the French flag. Even if we ignore precedent, the Commons discussion you linked has 5.5 people who want to have the new flag under this file name, and 3 people against. This is similar to consensus found at Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2024/06#Renaming of File:Air Force Ensign of India (2023).svg. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:25, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix: it's true that those colours are not specifically about the flag, but being part of the symbols of the French republic, they are the closest thing we have to the official colours of the flag (French blue, white and Marian red), which is also shown here (and described as the flag). Most of those who supported the change where in fact supporting what they perceived as the official flag, whose precise colours were/are unknown. M.Bitton (talk) 17:57, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Bitton: The current file is at least close to the official/default flag, per [2] and other sources. The other flag is an alternate official flag. Whilst the exact shades of dark can be debated due to varying digital interpretations, it's clear the URL here has shades that are definitely not close to the current official flag's shades. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 18:49, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix: since the other sources don't mention the exact colours, all we're left with is guesswork (depending on the light, the camera angle, etc). The flag that is used on the government website is as official as it can get and in line with the official colours. M.Bitton (talk) 18:57, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Bitton: moving this to village pump rather than AN FYI. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 18:59, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix: thanks. M.Bitton (talk) 19:03, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment I was pinged above as a french speaker, 1/ actually the French Flag is definited by the 2nd article of the French Constitution "L'emblème national est le drapeau tricolore, bleu, blanc, rouge.", litteraly traduced by "The national emblem is the tricolor flag, blue, white, red". Neither more nor less. The French Constitution is above all the other "common" laws, decrees, orders, circulars, ect... of the country, and 2/ it is also therefore of course above this page which is a graphic charter for government communication and public action. That don't mean that this charter is not relevant, it just mean that it can change tomorrow, next year or never. Now, if you ask me if we must update our French Flags here, or create new ones, or renames them... clearly I don't know. Hopes I helped. Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:31, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Christian Ferrer: thank you. BTW, The discussion was moved to the village pump. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 21:35, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unfair block and removal

On 17 November, I made multiple AWB-assisted edits to format file pages. None of my edits disrupted any page, yet –right after I went offline– 4 or 5 of them (out of hundreds) were contested by another user, who –in less than a couple hours– wrote both here and on my talk page about a bot not responding to talk page and –despite I answered both him and admin Yann in less than 10 hours– admin blocked me for 3 days and unilaterally removed my rights to Commons:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON, and refused to provide any rule/guideline against my edits, which, as I said before, literally disrupted 0 pages (out of hundreds I edited that day). Unless said admin resurrects and finally provides a guideline I broke, I may deserve some apologies, and I'm here to request the full restoration of my user rights. Daniele Fisichella 14:05, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Was there community approval for the kind of text edits you made? If yes, a link please? RoyZuo (talk) 16:49, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My take, looking at one of these edits more or less at random: with reference to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Handspindelpresse,_Zinkh%C3%BCtter_Hof_(2).jpg&diff=prev&oldid=958264099, changing another user's chosen way to be credited as author is certainly not good. That is their prerogative, not yours. The date format change is probably good; much of the rest of this is the sort of thing that fires off a notification and does nothing to improve the page. - Jmabel ! talk 17:42, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete 580 cat redirects

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?sort=last_edit_desc&search=category%3A+intitle%3A%2Fanoramics%2F+hastemplate%3Acategory_redirect

please delete all these cat redirects except Category:Panoramics, because they have implausible titles.

(if possible, dont delete all those "Panoramics in/of <country name>" either, but it's not necessary.)

see also Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/02/Category:Panoramics.--RoyZuo (talk) 20:20, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

and 257 of these, which is over half of them, are redirects from one implausible title to another implausible title. their targets are in the process of being removed as agreed upon in the cfd. what's the use of keeping these implausible redirects to targets that will soon also become deleted or redirected? leaving them around to confuse and work against uploadwizard, hotcat and catalot users? RoyZuo (talk) 22:36, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The first I checked had been in use since 2006. Redirects are helpful with uploadwizard, hotcat, etc - a user may not remember a correct or technical name, but the media will wind up there anyways thanks to the redirect. I have no objection to deletion of implausibly named never much used categories, but a large number of the categories you suggested for deletion are clearly not of that case. I have only looked at a sample, but from that I can see that your request as listed should be declined at least for being overly broad. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:48, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
#c-RoyZuo-20241124202000-Delete_580_cat_redirects: "if possible, dont delete all those "Panoramics in/of <country name>" either".
besides, between the 100th oldest (created in 2014) and the 580th oldest (aka the newest), what's the probability of 1 of them being in use since 2006? RoyZuo (talk) 23:05, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here are all 9 cat pages with "anoram" intitle, created before 2006-12-31, and related to the cat tree Category:Panoramas. none of them is a redirect and so none of them was in my original list of search results proposed for deletion.
RoyZuo (talk) 23:21, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't look it up before writing, but my point is the same even if it's only 5 or 10 years. A lot of people are used to these category names, vanishing them does not seem wise. - Jmabel ! talk 03:08, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

what does that link mean? which one of these pages has "correct expectable name"? RoyZuo (talk) 17:04, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd keep them for now, at least until categories are normalized in one way or the other. I'd review that question later. In general, it's a bad idea to have large numbers of very similar redirects.

Datasets about potential logos - October 2024 uploads

Hi all, we have released a new dataset of potential logos uploaded in October 2024, together with another one of those which have already been deleted as of 2024-11-25. We are sharing them with you for your consideration.

This is part of our current work with the logo detection tool. We hope it will be useful for your moderation activities.

If you encounter issues with the datasets or have comments/requests, please reach out to me or to Sannita (WMF).
