For the Sea Urchin genus, see Category:Salmacis (Echinoidea).
English: Salmacis was the naiad nymph of a spring at Halicarnassus in Caria. According to Ovid, she fell in love with the handsome youth Hermaphroditos and prayed to the gods to be united with him forever. Her wish was granted and the two were merged together to form one androgynous being. In classical times it was thought that her spring made men effeminate.
