English: Funerary Hatchment: an heraldic representation on a black or partially black lozenge-shaped board of the arms granted or inherited - the "achievement," of which word it is a corruption through such forms as atcheament, achement, hathement, etc. "Achievement" is from the French achevèment,(Collins Dictionary of the English Language, London, 1986) from achever, from a chef venir ("to come to a head"), ultimately from Latin ad caput venire, "to come to a head",(Larousse Dictionnaire de la Langue Francaise, Paris, 1979: "lat. pop. capum, class. caput) thus to reach a conclusion, accomplish, achieve. In German, the approximate equivalent is Totenschild, "death shield"; in Dutch rouwbord, "mourning board".
Français : Obiit, armoiries funéraires.
