Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)
Seen at the w:Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in the w:Medlock Park, w:Decatur.

  • I had never been here before, it's a really cool place. 28 acres of wetlands and a four-acre beaver pond inside the perimeter of Atlanta! When we first walked up we saw a screech owl in a tree cavity but it ducked inside before I could get a good picture. Lisa Hurt from the Atlanta Audubon Society lead us around the trails. This hawk captures birds with its feet and will squeeze them repeatedly to kill. It may drown its prey, holding a bird under water until it stops moving.
