     Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton was born on 28 September 1820 at Hildersham, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He was the son of Colonel John Potter Hamilton and Charlotte Fane.1 He was baptised on 27 July 1821 at Hildersham, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He married Laura Parry in 1855 at Bicester, Oxfordshire, England.1 He died on 29 April 1864 at age 43 at Gate Pa, Tauranga, New Zealand, killed in action.1
     He was commissioned on 28 August 1835, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 8 March 1844.1 He gained the rank of Commander on 27 November 1854.1 He fought in the Crimean War.1 He fought in the 2nd Anglo-Chinese War in 1856.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 26 February 1858.1 He fought in the Battle of Gate Pa on 29 April 1864.1
