It's rare for the stands at Indian Wells to be packed for a second-round match, let alone one on the day. However, when the reigning US Open winner announces herself, then the US fans are in line. And Coco Gauff didn't disappoint in the drama category. The local hero was already 0:4 behind against Clara Burel in the third set, but then managed the comeback to make it 5:5.
A tiebreak had to decide the outcome of this match. And Gauff stepped it up a notch and put Burel under constant pressure. And finally won 2:6, 6:3 and 7:6 (4). The next opponent will be Lucia Bronzetti from Italy.
Before that, another US Open champion had already reached the third round. However, Emma Raducanu only had to do short-time work. Because Dayana Yastremska, already in the semi-finals at the Australian Open this year, had to give up when the score was 0:4. A huge test now awaits Raducanu: she will face either Aryna Sabalenka or Peyton Stearns.
Daria Kasatkina is also in round three after a 6:3 and 7:6 (5) against Oceane Dodin.
