A solid afternoon game between Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti turned into a prime time event. At the Hard Rock Stadium, games don't start until 12 noon, after which three matches have to be played until 7 p.m. Mail does it better, sometimes less well. On Tuesday, however, the match between Victoria Azarenka and Yulia Putintseva was interrupted by a power outage in the facility's largest stadium.
And so Alcaraz and Musetti only came onto the court when Maria Sakkara and Elena Rybakina had already had to prepare for the run-in. But not much works in the converted football arena without electronics. So it was time to wait. But good: Alcaraz, 2022 champion in Miami, got it done fairly quickly, eliminating Musetti 6:3 and 6:3 in an entertaining game.
Much to the delight of most fans, the Alcaraz fan base in Miami is large. Musetti doesn't have to worry - the young father celebrated a thrilling victory against Ben Shelton in the previous round.
Alcaraz had to briefly wait for his opponent in the quarterfinals at the end of the game. Because Hubert Hurkacz, already a winner in Miami, played his entire entry fee against Grigor Dimitrov. In the end, the Bulgarian won the tiebreak of the third set with 3:6, 6:3 and 7:6 (3) - and was thus at least once in the quarterfinals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
