Biografia

DI PIETRA Vincenzo is Assistant Professor with fixed-term contract (RTD-B) at Politecnico di Torino - Italy, in the Department of Environment, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI) from May 2021 (https://www.diati.polito.it/personale/scheda/(nominativo)/vincenzo.dipietra). He teaches in various courses concerning geomatics in Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. degrees at Politecnico di Torino where he also participates in innovative teaching projects (challenges by firms) as a mentor. He is part of the Geomatics research group, and his research focuses on positioning and navigation in challenging environments via sensor fusion and data integration algorithms for smart cities and emergency management. He is a member of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) (Working Group 4.1.4. “Vision Aided Positioning and Navigation” of Sub-Commission 4.1: “Emerging Positioning Technologies and GNSS Augmentations”). His Ph.D. thesis, discussed in 2018, concerned the “seamless positioning and navigation in urban environment” and was developed in collaboration with the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) of the National Land Survey of Finland. The main scientific activities in this context were the analysis and performance evaluation of low-cost UWB systems for positioning and the validation of raw GNSS data from the newest dual-frequency smartphone receivers. He developed several multi-sensor algorithms for navigation with particular attention to vision-based systems. Recently, in the frame of the BEEMS project and with the collaboration of the Israeli partner of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he started developing and implementing OBIA and machine learning algorithms for land cover classification with UAS imagery for monitoring bee diversity in natural systems. He is the author of over 30 publications at national and international level, with articles in journals, book chapters, and proceedings. During his academic career, he has won the Young Author award at “62° CONVEGNO NAZIONALE Società italiana di fotogrammetria e topografia” in 2017, the Quality award 2018 for PhD students of the 31st and 32nd cycle, PhD School - Politecnico di Torino in 2018 and the best doctoral thesis conferred by the “Associazione Universitari di Topografia e Cartografia” – AUTeC in 2019. Regarding the activities concerned robotics and mapping, he has tutored several master’s students for thesis related to unmanned ground vehicles for precise agriculture, providing support on the topics of depth camera sensing for visual perception, 3D path planning, autonomous navigation, and ultrawideband positioning. He is also a member of the PIC4SeR - PoliTO Interdepartmental Centre for Service Robotics (https://pic4ser.polito.it/) where he shares tools and skills to experiment robotics solutions in different application scenarios (precision agriculture, smart cities, search&rescue, patrolling and early warning systems, life support for elderly and disabled people, rehabilitation, archaeological survey/security/protection, etc.).
