Raspberry Pi 5 Basic Kit - 8GB

Added to your shopping cart

A basic kit for getting started with the Raspberry Pi 5. Included in the kit is a new power supply that meets the power needs for the 5. It also includes our choice for a microSD card for use with the Pi line that meets the specs set by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and has fantastic read/write speeds. In addition a MicroHDMI cable is included for interfacing an HDMI display with the Pi 5 and We've also thrown in our Qwiic Shim for Raspberry Pi, the quickest way to use I2C devices with the Raspberry Pi. And of course a Raspberry Pi 5 Board with 8GB of RAM.

The Raspberry Pi 5 is next iteration of the Raspberry Pi single board computer featuring a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, Raspberry Pi 5 delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to Raspberry Pi 4. Alongside a substantial uplift in graphics performance from an 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU; dual 4Kp60 display output over HDMI; and state-of-the-art camera support from a rearchitected Raspberry Pi Image Signal Processor, it provides a smooth desktop experience for consumers, and opens the door to new applications for industrial customers.

For the first time, this is a full-size Raspberry Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Raspberry Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Raspberry Pi 5, and delivers a step change in peripheral performance and functionality. Aggregate USB bandwidth is more than doubled, yielding faster transfer speeds to external UAS drives and other high-speed peripherals; the dedicated two-lane 1Gbps MIPI camera and display interfaces present on earlier models have been replaced by a pair of four-lane 1.5Gbps MIPI transceivers, tripling total bandwidth, and supporting any combination of up to two cameras or displays; peak SD card performance is doubled, through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode; and for the first time the platform exposes a single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface, providing support for high-bandwidth peripherals.

Raspberry Pi 5 Basic Kit - 8GB Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Programming

If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.

3 Programming

Skill Level: Competent - The toolchain for programming is a bit more complex and will examples may not be explicitly provided for you. You will be required to have a fundamental knowledge of programming and be required to provide your own code. You may need to modify existing libraries or code to work with your specific hardware. Sensor and hardware interfaces will be SPI or I2C.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

2 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Rookie - You may be required to know a bit more about the component, such as orientation, or how to hook it up, in addition to power requirements. You will need to understand polarized components.

Pi 5 Arrived

Glad it finally arrived.

Ordered 09/28/2023, received 02/10/2024

Got it after 4 months. While I didn't mind waiting, one small thing bothered me is I got the black power adapter. Even though the website clearly showed the white adapter. No other issues.

very fast

Works great , very fast, Much faster than 4's.

Best RPI ever !!!

Replaced my RPI 4 and Jetson Nano.

Nice kit

I like to keep up to date with raspberry pi and this kit has the essentials. Very happy with the purchase

The product is wonderfull but...

As we all were hoping for the new raspberry pi5 is as marvelous product, but, the original charger that I bought as kit. is not working and so far I didnt get any work from sparkfun support to get a refund. It would be a good purchase overall, even buying this from Brazil, but seems like there is always a but,,,

Sorry to hear your experience here is not meeting expectations. We ware working diligently to assist all of our customers. We will get you taken care of soon!

Close to the best

I've been using Pis since their 2nd year. While the model 3 came out I bought 20 of them and made up full kits with everything but the screen for my grandchildren and step grandchildren. My only problem with the RPi 5 kit was that the SD card is a complete dud. I'm very happy with the 5s performance. For now it is my main desktop and the 4B it replaced will be used for canbus control of an Nscale layout.

Raspberry Pi 5

It looks as if they are beginning to become more available. Microcenter has them at $79 and amazon for $95 for the 8Gig model. I have not had a chance to stress test it yet, but works as expected. Was quite a wait from initial order.

Solid kit for a great mini desktop

Back-ordered though this has been, I am really enjoying the Raspberry Pi 5, and SparkFun's kit included everything I needed to get started, and determine what I wanted for a case or other accessories, once I was able to use the Pi 5 long enough to determine how fast it would be.

I look forward to trying the Qwiic Shim, but for now, I am really enjoying the very capable Pi 5 desktop.

Easy complete kit

I like it because it was complete. Quick and easy to install.

Few reasons why not 5 star .the I2c shim was loose in the bag. I almost tossed it (it’s smaller than a thumbtack) .the case, while pretty, pops apart easily (too easily)

And let’s discuss how long the order took to fulfill. I’m not sure which would be worse. To be out of stock for 6 months or in perpetual back order. I didn’t ding the Pi review for this. Pi is nice. Out of stock awful. I mean you couldn’t get a pi 4 for over a year before that.

I will say I’d almost forgotten about it such that the new shine had already worn out. 3 months, then 4,5,6. I dunno, I’ve turned it on twice to make sure it works. Hohumm. Not sure I’ll buy a pi again. It took too long.

Works fine, but delivery took over a month

The Video Cable is garbage

Do yourself a favor and buy the components separately, and DO NOT buy the red video cable as shown in the image. Buy a good quality video adapter cable, otherwise, you will end up throwing away the video cable in the kid and be forced to buy a new MicroHDMI cable.

The problem: The cable is horribly cheap quality. The wire is SO inflexible that it will NOT unwind or stay straight. It's like a coiled spring. Seriously.

When the video is plugged in, the Pi will not stay in position without putting a some weight on the case. This is because the cable is so inflexible.

They should change vendors or quit selling junk video cables.

After only plugging/unplugging it a few times and having it flip the Pi case, the connector at the Pi end failed.

Now, I'm forced to buy an adapter for the MicroHDMI, which doesn't make me happy because it's just more delays and money spent for nothing.

The rest of the stuff is OK, but since this is a "Kit", I'm giving the whole thing a 1.

good acquisition

Excellent products, I recommend

Exception status order

Still waiting for my order.

Have reached out to Sparkfun several times. Their site says “Exception” status orders require customer service attention.

I keep getting generic “backorder” reply emails when Pi5 and accessories are now readily available on Amazon.

Last time I order from Sparkfun. Either send me my merchandise or refund my money.

Sorry about the delay there. Send an Email to Support@SparkFun.com and we can get you taken care of.
