Hot-Air Rework Station - 8508D

This hot-air rework station is great for professionals and hobbyists in need of tight temperature tolerances and large air flows. This unit displays a digital readout of the actual air temperature with a flow rate of up to 24L per minute. This very powerful unit can be used for multiple applications including standard SMD reflow/repair/removal, thermal IC stress testing, thermoplastic welding, and shrink-wrapping.

Each 8508D Hot-Air Rework Station has two knobs on the front of the case to control air flow as well as temperature. This rework station even has a detachable power cable so if you happen not to live in North America, you can replace it to fit your own standard plug provided it still uses 110V.

Hot-Air Rework Station - 8508D Product Help and Resources

How to Use a Hot Air Rework Station

April 10, 2018

Hot-air stations or heat guns are very useful tools and are essential for any electronics workbench. When working with or building printed circuit boards, there is a lot of room for errors to be made. Have no fear though, there are ways to remedy this with a hot air rework station!

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

3 Soldering

Skill Level: Competent - You will encounter surface mount components and basic SMD soldering techniques are required.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

1 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Noob - You don't need to reference a datasheet, but you will need to know basic power requirements.

Works just fine

I bought it to do some small hot-air reworking and light surface mount assembly, and it has worked out just fine. Thanks!

Works well, but LARGE

The unit works well overall, but is quite a bit larger than other units available on the market. The controls and hand piece feel high quality. My only other complaint is the hose and power cable are both a little short for my liking which made some work a bit awkward to maneuver around.

Gets the job done for an excellent price

Independent air flow and heater control? Check. Temperature display? Check. Comes with a few different nozzles? Check.

Only thing I don’t know about is this Auto mode but I work in Manual and it just does exactly what I want so five stars from me.

Was able to solder leadless DFN-4 with little difficulty with this thing.

Arrived damaged, so I used it to repair itself

My hot air rework station arrived with a broken ground pin on the plug. The power cord is built into the device, so to repair it I needed to open the unit and splice in a new power cable, which I took from my cable collection (we all have one).

After I spliced the new power cable, I used the newly repaired rework station on the shrink wrap to insulate the wires. Worked like a charm.

I’m only giving the 3 stars because the product arrived damage, and Sparkfun’s support didn’t do anything to resolve the problem. They said they would send a replacement, but never did. And when I asked for a partial refund or credit toward another purchase I got radio silence. Otherwise, I’m pleased with the product.
