Response to: Low volume mixing method - Will it really work? Posted July 9th, 2021 in Audio

It can sometimes be useful to crank your mix, primarily to get a better sense of the overall density of your track's bass. However, it should only be done in short bursts and not be your standard volume for all the reasons everyone's already gone over

Response to: How music has changed since 2010 Posted December 9th, 2019 in Audio

It's the relentless march of technology. The barrier to entry into music production has gone from the 10s of thousands of dollars in the 80s, to the ~$10k area in the 90s, to the ~$1-2000 range in the 2000s, to now-- where you can produce professional quality audio with a budget laptop and a $100 interface. Similar situation for photography/videography, and pretty much any creative medium that's been adapted to digital production.

I'm not sure music's rate of change is much more in this decade than in previous ones from a genre/creative/stylistic standpoint, but in terms of the landscape and population, it's way different. More players/producers, more niches, more content; less listener attention, less monetary music consumption, less career viability. Such is the way of the world, good with the bad...

Response to: Where's The Guitar Music? Posted August 27th, 2019 in Audio

Being a drummer and not having neighbors is where it’s at ;)

To answer your original question, I’d say a lot have maybe scattered. I still post and participate here, but mainly during the audio competition “season.” There’s definitely a community focus on electronic music here, but that might just be a natural sort of evolution of the crowd. Might also just be that non-electronic musicians simply fare better in terms of views/response on more general platforms like YouTube.

Response to: Where's The Guitar Music? Posted August 27th, 2019 in Audio

I still play them real guitars.

And them real drums.

No, in this case it’s just done via linear editing. In Reaper, I use the nudge command, and in cubase I would just manually drag. Bumping up the peak display amplitude helps you better line up the waveforms. As an experiment at some point I may even try printing all the drums’ insert fx to their respective tracks (since they also inherently affect the phase) and realigning them afterwards to see if it makes any more difference.

Neat idea for a topic! Have enjoyed reading thus far.

Forgive me if this is a bit esoteric.

What I (re)learned: Phase is super important. By taking the time to make sure that the phase of the close mics on the drums fit nicely with the overheads, I saved myself from having to overuse EQ and compression to compensate for signals that clash with one another. This has the added benefit of letting the drums punch through the bass and distorted guitars without having to have an internal loudness war in the mix. Given, the kick is still hitting the master bus pretty hard, but the mix sounds plenty big without the waveform looking like a solid brick.

Other general things re-learned in hindsight:

-Procrastinating is bad, and you will settle for parts that you could have performed better (i.e. all my leads)

I'm sorry for what I'm about to say, but I think it is unfair to change the deadline at this moment of the competition.
I actually respect that opinion a lot. It's never an easy decision to extend the deadline, and perhaps I do place too much value on having more people participate. The NGUAC is a bit weird because many of the participants are in the competition because they're invited via PM, not because they're usually active in the forums and/or well-integrated into the community already. In my experience, that makes walkovers a lot more likely than in some other contests on the site. I still need to come up with a long-term solution to this, but I'll keep your thoughts in mind. Thanks!

Hosting it at a different time of the year would probably help. I've only been posting here on NG for a few years, but it seems like most of the regular competitions (AudioDM, Underdogs, Art-inspired, etc) happen right on top of one another.

I've done a bit of work in my recording room. I won't do it the justice of being called a "studio," really.

this is the setup at home, a little more modest i know haha

presonus eris e5 speakers + temblor t8 sub, scarlett 2i2 interface, old rode nt1a, dbx 286s vocal processor, alessandro ms-pro headphones

Even the home setup there is in a nice, tight, well-put-together space. Gear-wise, quality over quantity!

Also, the job sounds really cool. Having a professional studio space (I'll consider anything that that doesn't sport perpendicular walls) where you're not having to perpetually chase client work to keep the lights on is an enviable spot. Cheers to that!

Long time no see, errbody. Between working on other projects and for some clients, I decided to actually try my hand at a video game cover. Submitted this to OCRemix, but it turns out they take forever to judge material before posting, so I've posted this here and on Soundcloud in the meantime. For fans of old NES games and live drums in their rock/metal :P

Sorry for the uber-late reply here. I've been busy this summer, recorded a few local bands, and actually have interest from a small label in one of my recording projects, so i've been working on an LP. But I'll seriously consider joining in next year, it's always good as a creative exercise.

Welp, probably should've stuck to my wheelhouse and auditioned with a metal track instead. But glad to have thrown one of the few tracks I've ever braved in the electronic genre into the fray, especially up against a bunch of very experienced contenders in that space.

Good luck to those remaining!
