As far as I've found there are 3 avenues to getting people to listen to your music.

1) Karmatic attention - Give and you shall receive. Listen, rate and review, leave comments, make friends.

2) Make Quality Music - could take time, but practice makes better. If your music is good, eventually it will catch some people's attention. Don't sleep on # 1 though

3) Solicited attention - You can pay people to review your music (not on NG). Fiverr is a good resource for getting reviews, I recommend Jer at sleepingbagstudios for written reviews, and Spiderhands for video reviews. I have ongoing relationships with these two and they actually listen and give honest reviews. This path can get expensive though, so use it sparingly.

Decided to put together a compilation of all the tracks that were front-paged on Newgrounds.com, in commemoration of my fourth year of making music I consider to be of higher caliber than the many years prior. Just wanted to send a big thanks to the site and to any and everyone who scouted out these tracks to be put on the front-page, effectively broadening my audience and getting me more exposure on the site. As such, I am releasing this special album for free to anyone who wishes to partake.

Cheers,

I have no idea how to turn the quiet into something that sounds okay! even if i try to make something that sucks, it doesn't even feel like a song to me, just some noise. i'd like to try, though.

Anyway, enough about me, tell me about YOU! What's your workflow? How do you get in the zone to make music? do you start with a drumbeat, do you start with a melody? how do you know when a song is done? what's your favourite part of making music? is music is your artistic medium of choice, tell me about it! maybe i'll understand a little more about the art if i listen to the artists? :) (also this is my first ng forum topic! hello!)

welcome!

It varies for me but I've been doing this for almost 20 years. Sometimes I will begin with the core melody, sometimes the backing tracks first. It depends. Sometimes I will play with a whole bunch of sounds and noodle around with the ones i like. Nothing is set in stone. I usually am free form with it. I let the music guide me. I may have a general idea or plan, but 9/10 times i deviate from the original vision. One thing i try to stick to is this order: main components (melodies, counter-melodies, rhythm, percussion), then arrangement/sequencing, then effects, then mixing, then mastering.

I've finally came around to post the tracks I've made in the past year on here, with some hiccups due to having previously posted them using an online distributor and not being scouted yet, but now they've all been published so I'm happy.

but I wondered, would it be better for me to post everything I made/will make? everything as in unfinished projects, scrapped songs, songs I felt weren't too good to put on spotify, etc...
of course, with time, my standards for what I consider a "decent song" have changed and will continue to do so, so my question was more about how does the community or the site reacts when someone posts a lot of stuff, even unpolished or unfinished song? would it be annoying? is it fine? is it encouraged?

maybe I'm just overthinking this... would like to know you guys opinion about it!

hope to stay here for the long run

generally i don't post wips, and if anything i will upload a remaster later on if i happen to remaster the track. But i will never replace one of my tracks with a different arrangement. That's me though.

OK So I recently made a news post regarding my new album, I updated all the tracks to their final masters and also added an almost ten minute long "Suite" called "Broken Suite Dreams". It is the most personal track I ever written, basically like my life in ten minutes, Many dreams I've had and many broken, but I still somehow live on. Playlist on Newgrounds linked below, one song has been front-paged, the title track "Sojourn", however my favorite track + recommendation is the aformentioned.

Bound by Fate aka people seized with life, Departed Souls, Corridors of time, Schala's Theme. Mitsuda is my favorite composer on the vgm side. But I have many favorites beyond the chrono series.

Response to: I deserve attention! Posted October 9th, 2023 in Audio

Ok so let me just start by saying we all want attention. However to demand it is a little, well presumptuous. Focus on connecting your heart and soul to the music, and the rest will follow. You may not get famous, or infamous, but the true value of making music does not fall on recognition and accolades. If that was the case I’d have given up long ago. I don’t know your story, I might give these a listen when I get the chance, but please slow your roll. Just some friendly advice.

Response to: Drop your worst and best song Posted October 9th, 2023 in Audio

This is highly subjective. And every time I make a song I think is my best work it invariably never resonates with others the same way. I will have to think about this considering my catalog is 400+ tracks deep lol

Well, technically I have been making music electronically since 2004, but I would only show people my post-2019 tracks as they were markedly improved. That said, I feel I had some good musical ideas in those early days, and I actually revisited a lot of those tracks and revamped them when i got better. I did have a period of several years though where I pretty much made crap in my opinion, but some still claimed to enjoy them.

Hey I just made this in 6 hours today, and I'm pretty proud of it. Though there is one tiny little thing bugging me but I can't seem to fix it, like a software glitch. I'm not happy with the latest release of FL studio. I might have to downgrade my version if they don't fix the issues soon.

I'm making a new record (well, digital album at least). It's Ghosts Volume 2 in the house. It's halfway completed and I have to say it's a lot darker than volume 1. You can check out the album in progress here on NG or stop by my bandcamp page

I'd just like some high quality samples I can play on my keyboard/piano roll, the last one I used sounded good but it would only do chords and it was a bit clunky

I've been using Heavocity's Rhythmic Textures. Really like it. I like to split up the tracks to isolate control of the different violins and cellos. It really adds some atmosphere and emotion when used properly. Check it out :D

Isn't that the one I recommended to you?? Yeah heavyocity makes some damn good plugins, the 'textures' instruments are on the low end of the price range but still great buys. Also Elements if you're on a budget. If you want to go balls to the wall pick up NOVO, but wait until it goes on sale otherwise I believe it's like ~400 bucks.

Also, Session Strings Pro is quite decent for strings. I find myself using it quite often. It's a Native Instruments plugin

Response to: as a musician, what's your pet peeves when it comes to music? Posted September 19th, 2022 in Audio

since the question to me is unclear, and my interpretation may be wrong, I'll sum up my pet peeve in one word. MASTERING.

Mixing is a close second, but I've grown to enjoy it more, even though I have no clue what I'm doing.

Response to: do you listen to your own music that you made? Posted September 19th, 2022 in Audio

Doing it right now! yes I go through phases where I'll listen to my own music for a few days or more. I said I was going to be on hiatus the rest of the year, but I am working on one track. For me, listening to my own music is like a trip down memory lane, because most of my pieces are connected to a specific mood, feeling, memory, or event in my life. I've been making music since 2004, but mostly I listen to music I created from 2020 to present day, because there was a significant bump in quality over the years prior (in part because I couldn't afford a midi keyboard, fancy VST's, or spend more time on making music).

Welp I guess it's a good thing music production ain't my true calling XDXD

So I was wondering: has the community criteria radically changed or gotten stricter lately?

Couldn't tell you. It's really a numbers game, assuming you're putting in the same amount of effort throughout, and I haven't composed anything in months so my numbers are down this year. So I can't really make a judgement call. I did get a few FP's this year though, with the little output I had compared to the prior two years.

Or maybe I'm just a silly perfectionist.

I’m on a musical hiatus for an indeterminate period of time, but all I can say is that my music was good enough to attract almost 100 fans. It was a fun journey, but I find myself listening to my own music less and less and appreciating other people’s music more and more. What I’ve made came from my heart and soul mostly, and that I appreciate. I’m no professional that’s for sure. I’d say I’m in the lower intermediate part of the spectrum when it comes to both composition and production. Weaker in production though. But some people like my music, and in the end, I really made it for my own emotional release as a creative outlet. I rarely check my stats anymore, I’m not so much interested in what other people think. I appreciate it for what it’s worth and I’m proud of the improvements I’ve made especially during the years of 2019 to 2022. I’ve been at this since 2004 in some way, shape or form. I’m happy with my output but by no means will I say I’m a pro artist. But yeah, I do appreciate my body of work overall. But I’m thinking maybe it’s time to move on and pursue other outlets. Idk maybe one day I’ll come back to making music, I have more than enough tools for it. I’ve just lost the urge. But hey I’ve made ~240 tracks in two and a half years so there’s that….
