John D. Rockefeller:
Born on July 8th, 1839 into a humble family. From an early age showed a keen business acumen. At the age of 20, he founded his first oil refinery, marking the beginning of a meteoric rise that would make him the richest man in the world at the time.
Rockefeller was a pioneer in implementing innovative methods for oil extraction, transportation, and refining, which lowered costs and maximized efficiency. His strategic vision led him to create the Standard Oil Company, a conglomerate that came to control 90% of US oil production.
Driven by his ambition for an oil monopoly, John D. Rockefeller employed aggressive tactics worthy of a true mobster. These included bribery, espionage, and eliminating competition through buyouts or intimidation. These practices earned him the infamous nickname "The Robber Baron." Rockefeller was the lord and master of American politics because he was powerful enough to make any politician his servant.
John D. Rockefeller, best known for his oil empire and paving the way for the rise of Big Pharma, also ventured into the real estate sector, primarily in New York City. Recognizing the profit potential, he purchased large tracts of land at low prices and held onto them until their value increased (This is the genesis of the real estate speculation we face today.)
A notable example is the Rockefeller Center, a complex that transformed a blighted area into a commercial and cultural hub.
Rockefeller was criticized for using his wealth to acquire land at below-market rates and for the ostentatiousness of his projects. However, his real estate investments significantly impacted the development of New York City.
In his later years, Rockefeller dedicated much of his fortune to philanthropy in an attempt to clean his image, founding educational and medical research institutions. However, his public image could never escape the shadow of his abusive practices and the labor exploitation to which he subjected his workers.
John D. Rockefeller was a modern-day villain, a product of his time and context. His figure represents the contradictions of capitalism: the capacity to generate economic progress and well-being alongside the excesses and corruption that can arise in the unbridled pursuit of power.
