this took too long in the end but i wanted to follow up my last poor sketch.

dwellers of the volcanic valleys. these big brutes live in a social caste similar to lions with the females (hens) doing the brunt of the housework. The males have been left to evolve rather flashy means of display and offense. They have bulbous heads and fleshy collars filled with blood. They'll rasp their soft heads against the thorny plants of their rocky habitat and then force jets of blood that mix with a coagulant the moment it begins to contact the air. These provide instant, unique horn-like formations which they can then use for battle or showing off. They will break off, splinter, and naturally encourage more spiky growth over their lifetime, with older males having encrusted heads. It may impair their vision, hearing, jaw or neck movement, with loners being easy prey for poachers.

I hope to do an image at some point showing the domesticated/trophy Veriles, where the native races have sculpted their horns into less chaotic displays.
