2 He defied the Lord’s will, following the sinful example of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin, and never departing from it. 3 His anger thus provoked, the Lord left Israel at the mercy of Hazael, king of Syria, and his son Benadad, without respite; 4 till at last Joachaz besought the Lord’s favour. (This prayer the Lord answered, seeing Israel hard pressed by the Syrian king’s inroads upon them; 5 and he gave them a champion to set them free from the Syrian yoke. Then once more the men of Israel could dwell in their old homes; 6 but even so they did not forgo the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin; they clung to them still, and still the forest-shrine had its place in Samaria.[1]) 7 In the time of Joachaz, nothing was left of the army but fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot-soldiers; such havoc the king of Syria had made among them, sweeping them away like chaff on the threshing-floor. 8 What else Joachaz did, all his history, and the record of his great deeds, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel. 9 He was laid to rest with his fathers, with Samaria for his burying-place, and the throne passed to his son Joas.
10 ἐν ἔτει τριακοστῷ καὶ ἑβδόμῳ ἔτει τῷ Ιωας βασιλεῖ Ιουδα ἐβασίλευσεν Ιωας υἱὸς Ιωαχας ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ ἑκκαίδεκα ἔτη 11 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ ἐν αὐταῖς ἐπορεύθη 12 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ιωας καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν καὶ αἱ δυναστεῖαι αὐτοῦ ἃς ἐποίησεν μετὰ Αμεσσιου βασιλέως Ιουδα οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ 13 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ιωας μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ Ιεροβοαμ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ τοῦ θρόνου αὐτοῦ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ 10 This Joas, the son of Joachaz, came to the throne of Israel in the thirty-seventh year of Joas king of Juda; and his reign in Samaria lasted sixteen years. 11 He defied the Lord’s will, and would not abandon the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin; he clung to them yet. 12 What else Joas did, all his history, and the record of his great deeds, and his war with Amasias king of Juda, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel. 13 He was laid to rest with his fathers, and the throne passed to his son Jeroboam. (Joas was buried in Samaria, with the other Israelite kings.) 10 Anno trigesimo septimo Joas regis Juda, regnavit Joas filius Joachaz super Israël in Samaria sedecim annis.
14 καὶ Ελισαιε ἠρρώστησεν τὴν ἀρρωστίαν αὐτοῦ δ{I'} ἣν ἀπέθανεν καὶ κατέβη πρὸς αὐτὸν Ιωας βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ καὶ ἔκλαυσεν ἐπὶ προσώπου αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πάτερ πάτερ ἅρμα Ισραηλ καὶ ἱππεὺς αὐτοῦ 15 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ελισαιε λαβὲ τόξον καὶ βέλη καὶ ἔλαβεν πρὸς αὐτὸν τόξον καὶ βέλη 16 καὶ εἶπεν τῷ βασιλεῖ ἐπιβίβασον τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπὶ τὸ τόξον καὶ ἐπεβίβασεν Ιωας τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ τόξον καὶ ἐπέθηκεν Ελισαιε τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὰς χεῖρας τοῦ βασιλέως 17 καὶ εἶπεν ἄνοιξον τὴν θυρίδα κα{T'} ἀνατολάς καὶ ἤνοιξεν καὶ εἶπεν Ελισαιε τόξευσον καὶ ἐτόξευσεν καὶ εἶπεν βέλος σωτηρίας τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ βέλος σωτηρίας ἐν Συρίᾳ καὶ πατάξεις τὴν Συρίαν ἐν Αφεκ ἕως συντελείας 18 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ελισαιε λαβὲ τόξα καὶ ἔλαβεν καὶ εἶπεν τῷ βασιλεῖ Ισραηλ πάταξον εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐπάταξεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τρὶς καὶ ἔστη 19 καὶ ἐλυπήθη ἐ{P'} αὐτῷ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ εἶπεν εἰ ἐπάταξας πεντάκις ἢ ἑξάκις τότε ἂν ἐπάταξας τὴν Συρίαν ἕως συντελείας καὶ νῦν τρὶς πατάξεις τὴν Συρίαν 14 And now Eliseus lay sick in his mortal illness, and Joas, who was then king of Israel, went to visit him; My father, my father, he said weeping, Israel’s chariot and charioteer! 15 Eliseus bade him fetch bow and arrows, and when bow and arrows were brought, 16 he would have the king of Israel hold the bow in readiness. The bow was stretched, and Eliseus put his own hands over the king’s hands; 17 Now, said he, open the window that looks east, and he opened it; Shoot, and he shot. Yonder shaft, Eliseus told him, betokens the divine deliverance, deliverance from the power of Syria. It is for thee to defeat the Syrians utterly, there at Aphec. 18 Then he would have Joas take up his arrows, and when he had done so, bade him shoot, there on the ground. Shoot he did three times, and then held his hand. 19 Whereupon the prophet said to him angrily, Five times thou shouldst have let fly, or six, or seven, to defeat the Syrians utterly; this signifies three defeats and no more.
20 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Ελισαιε καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν καὶ μονόζωνοι Μωαβ ἦλθον ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐλθόντος τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ 21 καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτῶν θαπτόντων τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ ἰδοὺ εἶδον τὸν μονόζωνον καὶ ἔρριψαν τὸν ἄνδρα ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Ελισαιε καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ἥψατο τῶν ὀστέων Ελισαιε καὶ ἔζησεν καὶ ἀνέστη ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ 20 In the year of Eliseus’ death and burial, the country was being ravaged by freebooters from Moab. 21 Some of these appearing suddenly when a dead man was being carried out to his funeral, the bearers took fright, and threw the corpse into the first grave they could find; it was that of Eliseus. And no sooner had it touched the prophet’s bones, than the dead man came to life again, and rose to his feet.
22 καὶ Αζαηλ ἐξέθλιψεν τὸν Ισραηλ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας Ιωαχας 23 καὶ ἠλέησεν κύριος αὐτοὺς καὶ οἰκτίρησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπέβλεψεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς διὰ τὴν διαθήκην αὐτοῦ τὴν μετὰ Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ καὶ Ιακωβ καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν κύριος διαφθεῖραι αὐτοὺς καὶ οὐκ ἀπέρριψεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ 24 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Αζαηλ βασιλεὺς Συρίας καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν υἱὸς Αδερ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ 25 καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ιωας υἱὸς Ιωαχας καὶ ἔλαβεν τὰς πόλεις ἐκ χειρὸς υἱοῦ Αδερ υἱοῦ Αζαηλ ἃς ἔλαβεν ἐκ χειρὸς Ιωαχας τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ τρὶς ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν Ιωας καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὰς πόλεις Ισραηλ 22 All through the life-time of Joachaz, king Hazael of Syria had pressed Israel hard; 23 but now the Lord relented and came to their aid once more. Faithful to his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, he would not make an end of them and cast them off utterly as yet. 24 So, when Hazael died, and his son Benadad succeeded him as king of Syria, 25 Joas was able to retake those cities which his father Joachaz had lost to Benadad’s father Hazael, and by right of conquest; three times Joas was victorious, and restored the lost cities to Israel.
