Human antibodies offer broad inhibition against variable proteins of the malaria parasite

Antibodies from malaria-exposed individuals have been found to target a diverse family of proteins from the malaria-causing parasite. These proteins cause severe disease by enabling infected blood cells to bind to blood vessels.

Malaria, a blood-borne infection caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium, remains a global health threat. Of the 249 million malaria cases in 2022, more than 600,000 were fatal (see go.nature.com/48ummr6). Most malaria deaths occur in children living in sub-Saharan Africa who are infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Writing in Nature, Reyes et al.1 provide insights into how antibodies can target a key parasite protein.
