Kevin TrudeauBorn: 6-Feb-1963

Gender: Male
Religion: Scientology
Race or Ethnicity: White
Occupation: Author

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Natural Cures, fraudster

Modern-day snake-oil salesman Kevin Trudeau is famous for his ubiquitous TV infomercials, promising health and diet tips that the medical industry has allegedly suppressed or kept unavailable. He is also the founder of International Pool Tour, an organization that stages high-stakes billiards competition. In 1990, Trudeau pled guilty to passing $80,000 in bad checks, and in 1991 he was convicted of swindling about $120,000 by ringing up unauthorized sales on the credit cards of customers who bought his memory-improvement courses. He spent almost two years in prison.

The Federal Trade Commission has occasionally pursued Trudeau over deceptive advertising claims that misrepresent the content of his health and diet books. In 1998 he was fined $500,000 for false or misleading claims in TV infomercials. In 2004 he was issued a court injunction requiring him to stop making disputed medical claims for his Coral Calcium Supreme, and he was later found in violation of this order, and fined $2,000,000 to settle these charges.

In 2005 Trudeau turned the tables and sued the FTC, claiming that the agency had mischaracterized the 2004 settlement in a press release, and that the FTC had overstepped its authority in going after him. Both claims were promptly dismissed, and when Trudeau appealed to a higher court his complaints were dismissed there as well. In 2007, the FTC charged Trudeau with violating a previous court order that restricted the claims he could make in his television ads. In 2010 Trudeau was sentenced to thirty days in jail for urging his customers/followers to email a federal judge hearing a civil lawsuit against him. In 2013 he was again found guilty of criminal contempt of court for continuing to buy lying television commercials to sell his books. In 2014 he was sentenced to ten years in prison on those charges and fined $37M, but claiming to be "wiped out financially" and rendered "effectively homeless," he has made no payments.

The hundreds of American television stations that accept his payments and air his ads have not been prosecuted.
