REVIEWS

Excellent short stories, acting and directing. Jeannie Crain, Charles Laughton and Richard Widmark were particularly good. Marilyn Monroe's cameo piece was also memorable.

This collection of short stories converted to film does justice to the author. I had read the stories as a boy and when these appeared on TV I was moved emotionally as I had been when I had been introduced them for the first time. It was as if Alfred Hitchcock, Rod Serling or the author himself has been in a rocking chair across the room reading the stories. This is one time the film is as good as the book.

As a student of O.Henry's Works for many years and a writer myself; I found the movie presentation to be an accurate depiction of the author's work. The casting was excellent and captured the essence of what O.Henry was saying in his stories and the acting was great. I personally would like to have seen this film made available on VHS or DVD but to the best of my extensive searches none exist. My copy is one taped from this film on the Ted Turner channel and the only one available. The only significant actor missing from the list shown here is Gregory Ratoff (Behrmann in the "Last Leaf") and should be added. with thanks Roberta Anaya
