It has been many years since I first saw Black Tuesday (1954) back when I was a teenager on TV, yet the film has left an extremely, unforgetable impression on me. The acting seems extremely good and tense. Edward G. Robinson really shines as a cold blooded killer. Peter Graves is very good, too, as the bridge building prisoner. I still remember a couple of his lines from this movie, "The stink of men frying,"(in the electric chair), and, after the prison break, "It's like being born again." This kind of movie makes you want to favor the death penalty. Another good line before the prison break is when a guard goes into Robinson's cell. After cutting Robinson's pants leg for the electrode this same guard then says to EGR, "Nice night for a burning, Canelli." Another execution witness who states, "I haven't missed a burning in eight years." I've often wondered if the death house scenes were filmed on location in a real prison or on a Hollywood sound stage. The electric chair looked very real, especially when a board of lights was used to test it like shown in this movie, because in real life, I think this is one of the ways the real chair is tested. Being filmed in B&W, I think, added to this film. If I'm not mistaken, isn't this movie supposed to take place in New Jersey? Black Tuesday is one of my favorite, if not, my all time favorite movie. I definitely hope this movie will be released on DVD, because I will be standing in line to get it.
