Lina, a repressed young woman who by her own parents' judgment is "not the marrying kind", meets and eventually marries the handsome and charming Johnnie Aysgarth. But as she builds a clearer picture of Johnnie's life, she suspects he is trying to murder her. RKO forced Hitchcock to ruin the ending. For her role as Lina, Joan Fontaine received the Oscar for Best Actress; the film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Dramatic Score.
