William Holden is prisoner-of-war J. J. Sefton, who makes the most of his situation by exploiting the black market. When two prisoners attempt an escape, Sefton is the only one who bets against. Other prisoners suspect an informant, and the likely suspect is Sefton. Holden won the Oscar for Best Actor; the film received additional nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Best Director.
