What a wonderful example of magnificent lighting all throughout the film. A real treat to see lighting used so well to set mood. While James Garner is no doubt the star, let us not forget that New York is the co-star. For me, this film is perhaps one of the finest examples of a mood piece being excuted with lighting and old city buildings. You almost get lost in the pure black and white world of perfect lighting and forget there is a plot. While the plot is somewhat weak, the direction and lighting make up for what the writers failed to accomplish. As a long time fan of James Garner I found this film a departure from the other films he had done up until this film, and for that matter from that day forward. I feel this just might be one of his finest works, and certainly his most memorable film if you consider the unique nature of this work.This film should be included in each and every class taught on film and the art of film making. Rarely will one see such talent in the lighting, and rarely will one find such a captivating mood as this film has managed to set with attention to detail of lighting. I was fortunate enough to see a documentary on the making of this film, and was so impressed with the tremendous effort to always have perfect lighting for each and every scene. Both the film, and documentary film on the making of Mister Buddwing were equally interesting and to this day remain as fine of an example of excellence in the art and craft of film making as one can find. If you have not seen this film, please do. If you have seen this film, you will find yourself drawn back time and again to watch it over and over. And to Jim, get well soon and all the best! You must know you have many fans who will always enjoy your work.
